HALINÁ Modern Filipino Kitchen + Bar: Modern Filipino Food in Hastings-Sunrise

Halina is a chef-driven Filipino kitchen and bar on East Hastings Street, between Nanaimo Street and Kamloops Street in Hastings-Sunrise. The menu takes dishes many Filipino families grew up on and gives them a modern finish, and the bar answers with drinks built on calamansi, ube and pandan.

From a To-Go Counter to a Full Dining Room

Halina began as Bigboy’s Chigs To-Go, a small takeout and catering business run by four friends with a shared love of Filipino cooking. The restaurant on East Hastings is what that project grew into: a full dining room where Filipino tradition meets Canadian ingredients, open to anyone, whether they grew up on sinigang or are about to try it for the first time.

The room runs on upbeat music and a lively, social energy, and the kitchen backs that up with plates made for passing around the table.

Weekend Brunch

On Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the brunch menu brings out silog plates such as Three Stars and a Sun, with a choice of tapa, sisig, baconchon or fried marinated milkfish alongside two eggs and garlic rice. A grilled eggplant frittata and pandesal sandwiches round it out.

Tambayan Hour

Tambayan is Tagalog for a hangout spot, and it is what Halina calls its happy hour: every day from 8 p.m. to close, plus 2 to 5 p.m. on weekends. The list covers signature cocktails like the Kalabaw, a Filipino twist on the Moscow Mule, with Filipino beers and a handful of plates to share.

Parking and Access

Halina sits on the north side of East Hastings between Nanaimo Street and Kamloops Street. A free two-hour community parking lot is at the corner of Kamloops Street and Franklin Street, and pay street parking runs until 10 p.m. The entrance is wheelchair accessible.
